FD - Toronto

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 4 months ago

Toronto was where my uncle (mother's side) and his wife lived.  Since they were the closest relatives we had, we visited them every so often, and they visited us.

I got the impression from my parents that my uncle thought his sons were a bit of a disappointment.  The one I knew ended up as a mechanic.  He supposedly didn't try hard in school, and part of this was because my aunt babied him too much (she was really nice to everyone).

They lived in the Scarborough area of Toronto, which I remember distinctly having a ton of Chinese people - enough to have the street signs in Chinese.  The name also strikes me as familiar because my mother used to sing the song "Scarborough Fair" when I was a young boy.

Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.

Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine.

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt (On the side of a hill in the deep forest green).

Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground).

Without no seams nor needlework (Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain).

Then she'll be a true love of mine (Sleeps unaware of the clarion call).

Tell her to find me an acre of land (On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves).

Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Washes the grave with silvery tears).

Between the salt water and the sea strands (A soldier cleans and polishes a gun).

Then she'll be a true love of mine.

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather (War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions).

Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Generals order their soldiers to kill).

And gather it all in a bunch of heather (And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten).

Then she'll be a true love of mine.

Sting: During Christmas of my 10th birthday, my uncle and aunt came to visit my family in Dallas.  They brought Super Soakers for my brother and I, and we were both extremely happy about it.

Now:

My uncle had a seizure about four years ago.  Since then, he has moved back to Hong Kong, and is in pretty bad shape.  He can't talk, and needs a maid to take care of him.  This, after the death of my mother's mother, has affected my mom pretty strongly.  My uncle was her oldest brother and took care of the family when their father died, and she always valued his opinions highly.  He would throw temper tantrums all the time, especially at people he didn't like.  It was like he had no 'inhibitions', he wouldn't really hide anything.  The people he was agitated around the most were his wife and his sons - this made me want to make sure my parents would never hate me like that.
